Power, performance and gorgeous visuals – that’s what we all look for in the ultimate dream gaming PC. And this build has it ALL! Therefore, to get to grips with just how amazing this build is, we benchmarked it against a few other gaming rigs. Strap yourselves in and sink your tech-teeth into this!
Note: This article is a continuation of Road to the RTX 2080 Ti Machine.
A powerful, reliable and easy to self-maintain build was request by the client and that’s what we delivered. In addition, we opted for a simpler build without RAID storage or custom watercooling but we still needed to pack a punch both visually and in terms of performance. Here’s a list of the full system specifications:
Type | Component |
---|---|
CPU | Intel Core i7-8700K 3.7Ghz (Hexa-core) |
MOBO | ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E |
RAM | G.Skill Trident Z 16GB Kit |
GPU | ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB |
Cooling | Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240R |
Storage | Samsung 970 EVO V-NAND M.2 500GB SSD |
Storage | Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD |
PSU | Cooler Master V850W (Fully Modular) |
Chassis | Cooler Master Mastercase H500M |
‘Modern,’ ‘sleek’ and ‘ultimately beautiful’ were the goals we set for ourselves – we think it worked out just perfect.
We put two other gaming PCs head-to-head against this build to try and get a measure of just how powerful it really is. These are the cut-down specs of the competition:
Comp. | GTX1060 i7-5820K | GTX1060 Ryzen 2700X |
---|---|---|
CPU | Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3Ghz (Hexa-core) | AMD Ryzen 2700X 3.7Ghz (Octa-core) |
RAM | HyperX 16GB Kit | Corsair Vengeance 16GB Kit |
GPU | Palit GTX 1060 SJS 6GB | MSI GTX 1060 6GB |
Cooling | Water | Air |
PSU | Corsair CX600 | Corsair TX650M |
To keep things fair and get the most consistent results, we ran 4 different benchmarking software with the same settings across all the PCs. It’s worth noting that all this software is free to use with some having paid-for options.
Benchmarks: 3DMark / Cinebench / FurMark / UNIGINE (Superposition)
GTX1060 i7-5820K
GTX1060 Ryzen 2700X

There’s a lot of numbers flying around those result screens, so to make things easier we’ve summarised the winner and runner-ups in the table below:

In conclusion, when comparing a couple of GTX 1060s to the awesome might of an RTX 2080 Ti, we don’t think anyone would be surprised to know that it vastly outperformed the other PCs in the GPU category. However between the two GTX 1060s, there was a marginal difference in performance which came from Palit GTX 1060 Super JetStream. This is an overclocked version of the standard GTX 1060 which gave it an ‘edge’. However, the ‘edge’ was a mere 1 – 2 FPS over all the GPU tests so we’re not exactly breaking records here – interesting to note though.
The biggest surprise came when comparing the Intel Core i7s to the latest generation Ryzen. That Ryzen is blazingly fast and by a big margin! Of course, the Ryzen does have the benefit of an extra 2 cores, giving it 4 additional threads over the other CPUs. That said, we weren’t expecting such stable and full-throttle performance given AMD’s past CPUs. Not to mention that both i7s were water cooled and the Ryzen was air cooled using a STOCK cooler! We’re very impressed, so well done AMD!
Overall, there is a clear winner and to no surprise, the RTX 2080 Ti build absolutely smashed the competition. It performed consistently better during the benchmarking, only losing a few points during the CPU-based tests. For comparison, it’s overall 3DMark score was 11638 compared to 4533 and 4601 for the two GTX 1060 builds.
We think anyone would’ve guessed that the RTX 2080 Ti build would win, but we thoroughly enjoyed benchmarking these builds against each other and have new found respect for AMD’s Ryzen series.
Above all, thank you to everyone involved in these tests and making it such an enjoyable experience!
